A Star Volunteer: Barcelona, Spain
Congratulations
to Jesús Garcia on fifty years of faithful service
Volunteers play an important role in the work of AOS all
over the world. One of these is Mr Jesús Garcia of Spain
who, in 2008, celebrates 50 years of faithful service with
AOS. Jesús became a volunteer ship visitor in the port of
Barcelona in 1958. Soon after, he became secretary of the
Stella Maris Centre where he has worked ever since.
In April 2008, during the annual assembly of AOS
Barcelona, friends and colleagues paid tribute to Jesús. He
received a letter of congratulations from Archbishop
Marchetto, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Migrants
and Itinerant People, which included a blessing from the
Pope.
Deacon Ricardo Rodriguéz-Martos, port chaplain in
Barcelona and director of the Stella Maris Centre, said of
Jesús
"He is a great Christian with a strong sense of duty and
is committed to the People of the Sea. His enthusiasm and
generosity have been, and remain, an example to all".
